Chateau Leoville-Poyferre, situated in the esteemed Saint-Julien appellation, boasts a stunning location overseeing a sprawling 60-hectare vineyard exclusively devoted to crafting its First Wine and Second Wine. The vineyard is home to vines with an average age of 37 years and is strategically positioned on terraces composed of Mindell gravel atop clayey-sandy subsoils. Notably, the estate has proudly held the HVE 3 (Haute Valeur Environmental level 3) certification since the 2017 vintage, attesting to its commitment to environmentally friendly and sustainable practices.
In the process of vinification and aging, the harvest was executed by hand and the bunches were meticulously sorted to ensure only the finest quality grapes were utilized. The vinification took place in tapered, thermoregulated stainless steel tanks on a plot-by-plot basis. Before the alcoholic fermentation, a period of cold pre-fermentation maceration was conducted, followed by the main fermentation with specially selected yeasts. Subsequently, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in new oak barrels. Aging of the wine extended for an impressive 18 to 20 months within French oak barrels, with a balance of 80% being new barrels and 20% previously used for a prior vintage.
For the Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2020, the final blend was skillfully composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (64%), Merlot (31%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (2%). This meticulous selection and blending of grape varieties contribute to the wine's unique character and complexity, offering a well-rounded representation of the estate's terroir and winemaking expertise.
